There is no Norwegian method. That is the point.

Øyvind Sandbakk did not give us a secret session. He explained why the environment around the training may matter even more.

The episode people are listening to twice.

The response to our conversation with Professor Øyvind Sandbakk has been overwhelming. It is performing exceptionally well—but the messages behind the numbers are what have stayed with us.

The person behind the fast-growing training account @enduranced_official told us they listened to the full episode twice and had goosebumps throughout. We have heard the same feeling in different forms from athletes, coaches and parents: this conversation put words to something many people had sensed but could not quite explain.

The system behind the sessions

Sandbakk's central point was bigger than threshold intervals or weekly volume. Norway's success sits inside a sporting culture: strong clubs, educated coaches, access to knowledge, resources and a willingness to share what works. Copying one Norwegian workout without that context means copying the visible part while missing the machinery underneath.

That is also why the discussion moved so naturally between physiology, technique, altitude, testing and failure. Sandbakk kept returning to the athlete in front of you. A test is information, not an exam. A mistake can be part of learning. More training only becomes useful when the athlete is ready to absorb it.

Fourteen is not twenty-two

His advice for athletes at 14, 18 and 22 resonated because it refused to treat development as one programme with three different volumes. Young athletes need room to explore, learn technique, build habits and gradually take ownership. The route should become more individual as the athlete grows—not more copied.

That message is simple, but it is not easy. It asks coaches to be patient, athletes to stay curious and everyone around them to value long-term development over the session that looks most impressive online.

If the episode keeps travelling, we hope this is why: not because it promised the Norwegian secret, but because it made better questions feel more valuable than an easy answer.
